The church building was dedicated in September 1871. On October 9, the second day of the Great Fire, the church was destroyed. Just 4 days after the fire services were held and church began to be rebuilt.
" Although the decor of the church was modified several times; the 1985 restoration by walker Johnson and the firm Holabird and Root returned the original 100-year old patterns and 26 colors to the interior to provide what an expert calls the best example of Victorian stencil work in the world."
The church has beautiful windows.

Sanctuary 1 is 2 stories tall on the ground floor.
Sanctuary 2 is known as the "Dixon Chapel" and is on the 2nd floor.
Sanctuary 3 also known as the "Sky Chapel" is the smallest sanctuary. The Sky Chapel was installed in 1952 as a gift from Myrtle Walgreen in memory of her husband who founded the chain of drugstores under their surname.
