The church building was dedicated in September 1871. On October 9, the second day of the Great Fire, the church was destroyed. Just 4 days after the fire services were held and church began to be rebuilt.
" Although the decor of the church was modified several times; the 1985 restoration by walker Johnson and the firm Holabird and Root returned the original 100-year old patterns and 26 colors to the interior to provide what an expert calls the best example of Victorian stencil work in the world."
The church has beautiful windows.

According to a city of Chicago website, the church received its initial funding from Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and is said to resemble Russian provincial churches. Many octagonal elements were used in the design of the cathedral, and the dome rising from the church's center is eight-sided. Murals and wood carvings have been added to the church by Yuri O. Skorupsky, a Ukrainian-born artist and wood carver who now lives in America.
